Celebrating the opening of TK Maxx in Edinburgh city centre!

I love a good shop just as much as the next woman, but sometimes paying full price for a designer handbag makes my bank account weep (and I might be a bit reluctant to hand over my debit card to see all my hard earned savings deplete). Designer outlets were never a big thing in Hong Kong so when you catch wind of an exclusive designer sale (or pop up outlet), everyone scrabbles to get the best items like it’s Black Friday.

Last week saw the launch of the TK Maxx St Andrew Square store which was an exciting new development for all.

TK Maxx opens the doors to its newest store, St Andrews Square; Edinburgh, offering designer labels for less to Scottish savvy shoppers.. Aug 18 2016

This will be their fifth store within the Edinburgh area including: Meadowbank Shopping Park, Craigleath Retail Park, Fort Kinnaird Shopping Park and Livingstone Almondvale West Retail Park. If you haven’t heard of TK Maxx before, it is Europe’s leading off-price apparel and homeware retailer selling a huge assortment of designer labels, top brands, up-and-coming labels, stylish fashion and one-off gems, at up to 60% less than the RRP or at a significant discount to the price you’d pay at a traditional department store or on the high street. TK Maxx launched in the UK in 1994 and now has over 300 stores across the country. With regular deliveries through the week, customers can see up to 10,000 new items at the store!

If designer handbags, sunglasses, watches, shoes or clothing aren’t your thing, don’t worry! The stores also house home ware and athletic goods as well as treats at discounted prices for all to enjoy!

Several Edinburgh bloggers and myself were invited to a special VIP event the night before opening day on Thursday 18th August for an exclusive preview of what’s (literally!) in store. We were treated to lovely bubbly and cocktails compliments of Edinburgh Gin and delicious savoury canapés such as mozzarella and cherry tomato skewers with prosciutto, Mull cheddar and Parmesan lollipops and herb marinated seared beef with mustard on crostini while given free reign to shop to our hearts’ content.

On hand were also beauticians from Nails Inc, Harvey Nichols who offered complimentary nail services, a photo booth where we took souvenir snaps of our fun night, a colour consultation service by model and blogger Numba Pinkerton. We learned about how colours are separated by ‘warm’ (colours that have yellow or orange undertones and remind you of the sun) and ‘cool’ tones (which have more blue or cool tones and remind you of the cold). It was insightful and eye-opening experience for us to learn how to recognise the different tones in shades of the same colour (although a few of us failed occasionally, we blame it on the free-flowing drinks!) and how this either brightens or drains us of energy.

Can you guess which shade of green is warm and which is cool?

We were also given demonstrations of warm and cool colour wheels and shown how it makes a difference to our unique colouring. Some of us suit warm shades of colour more than cool shades and it’s useful to recognise which tones suit us best to help us choose the right shades to try on when going shopping (especially when you’re given an exclusive shopping experience at TK Maxx!). Each of us were given colour cards to carry with us so we have a reference point when selecting the right colours to try on in the shop (in case you were wondering, I lean towards cooler shades but can wear warm tones too).

If you’re interested in learning more about how to make the most out of wearing colour to brighten your personality, her book The No Black Project will be published in October.

As a lovely (and sweet!) send off, the team at TK Maxx also provided us with a very nostalgic and fun gift: pick’n’mix!

Guests were invited to pick and mix sweet treats for their own sweetie bags

My friend (who was my plus one for the night) and I enjoyed the manis from the complimentary nail bar as well as the £25 store credit we were given to spend on the night.

I was on the hunt for a red dress to wear to a friend’s hen do but couldn’t find anything suitable, but that didn’t stop me from stocking up goodies for the home and for upcoming travel plans!
